CONTACT: Amy Hartley, 907-474-5823, info

In the outer reaches of our solar system, a NASA spacecraft is slowly moving toward its Pluto rendezvous. The 2014 Science for Alaska Lecture Series begins with this story.

Peter Delamere, a space physicist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and a NASA consultant, will kick off the annual series Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel with “To Pluto and Beyond: NASA’s New Horizons Mission.”

For 22 years, the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute has hosted the Science For Alaska Lecture Series and this year welcomes new sponsor, Alaska EPSCoR. The lecture series will feature current research on aurora, remote sensing, noisy volcanoes, melting glaciers and the greening Arctic. Scientists presenting the lectures are on the forefront of their fields and will focus on projects relevant to Alaska. Lectures will continue on Tuesday evenings through Feb. 25.

The lectures will be in the Gold Room at the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel and Convention Center, with the exception of the Feb. 18 lecture, which will be in the Northern Latitudes room at the Westmark. All lectures are free. Following each lecture, audience members will have an opportunity to meet the scientists and ask questions.

At this time, no lectures are scheduled outside Fairbanks.

The 2014 Science for Alaska Lecture Series is sponsored by the UAF Geophysical Institute and Alaska EPSCoR.
