Community-based ocean monitoring workshop scheduled
CONTACT: Deborah Mercy, 907-274-9698, deborah.mercy
A workshop on community-based monitoring of Alaska’s coasts and oceans will
be held in Anchorage on April 1-2, at the Hotel Captain Cook.More than 120 participants from Alaska and other states will identify and
respond to common issues for citizen science, traditional knowledge and
public participation in scientific research — all part of community-based
monitoring. Participants will hear about model programs, clarify top
priorities for funders and community members, develop a set of guidance
documents (including best practices and lessons learned), and network with
others in Alaska who are interested in or are actively doing this work.Highlights will include remarks by Fran Ulmer, chair of the U.S. Arctic
Research Commission, and Reggie Joule, mayor of the Northwest Arctic
Borough, on how community-based monitoring fits into the larger discussion
on arctic research and policy. Two Arctic community-based initiatives will
be featured: an online atlas and a joint Russian-American community
perspectives dialog.Registration is required to attend the free workshop, which is being
sponsored by the Alaska Ocean Observing System, the Alaska Center for Ocean
Science Education Excellence and the University of Alaska Fairbanks Alaska
Sea Grant program.ADDITIONAL CONTACTS: Ellen Tyler, 907- 644-6715, cell: 207-952-0000,
