Geology workshop offered for weekend prospectors

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Mining Extension Program will offer a geology workshop for weekend prospectors May 17 in Anchorage.

The workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cooperative Extension Service district office at 1675 C St. The class will be taught by Judy Olson Hicks, who has extensive experience teaching environmental and outdoor education, including geology.

The course will introduce students to basic Alaska geology and promote the appreciation of geology on a recreational level. Topics will include rocks and minerals, significant mineral discoveries across Alaska, reading geology maps and locating accessible places of geologic interest.
